The Rio Grande Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) Proposal sought USDA approval to enroll and retire irrigated acres in exchange for monetary compensation. Upon full implementation, this project will replace 40,000 acres of previously cropped land in Subdistrict No. 1 with native vegetation, reducing water consumption by approximately 60,000 acre feet per year. The project is one of many efforts contributing to the Subdistrict’s goal of reducing consumptive use within the Closed Basin.
